Juan Orrantia - Like Stains of Red Dirt.
|
Like Stains of Red Dirt brings together a series of moments that recognize an experience of Johannesburg, South Africa, for more than 10 years. His use of colour throughout the book create a visual language through imagination and experience. They suggest emotions and anxieties as much as the presence of historical, political and representational content throughout the images. He uses subjective approaches that lead the viewer to think of perception and come up with their own story of the image. The name of the book comes from the floor of Johannesburg, the dirt has a red tint, which left an impression on him, or rather a "stain", therefore "Like stains of red dirt".

Instinctual Images
During our lesson we were asked to write around 10 words that described our method of taking a picture, what we think about, what we include or exclude etc. Initially thinking of words to write down was a difficult task, but the words were not something to think about, they came with instinct. Writing these words without having to think, almost as if we were taking a picture. I was then tasked to take images with these words in mind. Some of the images I took were from during the summer holiday on my trip to Belgium and at the time I didn't have this list, however I decided to include them as I remember precisely when and why I took them. It was instinctual, I didn't think to take them, they felt right in the moment.
