Visual Literacy.
This project was inspired by the visual artist and teacher Hicham Benohoud. It was to help partly to allow encourage to become more collaborative, persistent and imaginative in my approach to portraiture. We were given an image of Benohoud, and with it some questions to answer.
1. Describe what you see in the photo. What genre is the picture?
2. What do you find unusual or surprising about the subject matter? It's a serious study room and someone is at the front. Almost seems like the others don't acknowledge him although he stands out the most. 3. How would you describe the relationship between the foreground and background? It's quite distant, they don't interact. Very contrasting, the still background makes the boy in the middle the centre of attention and more prominent. He's the first thing we see. 4. Make a quick sketch of the photo. What do you notice about the composition? The bamboo makes a shape that guides the eyes of the viewer |
5. How does the photo make you feel?
It's a big difference to schools in the UK, we are more privileged and lucky, we have more access to opportunities whereas in morocco it's more limited, the room looks empty and stale. 6. What ideas do you think are explored in this photograph?

After looking into Benohoud and jotting down some ideas, we were then put into groups to improve on our collaboration, persistence and imagination. We were allowed to choose random props that were available, however we had to be quick at picking as others could take what we wanted first, so we had to work with what we had, which massively improved our persistence and imaginative skills as we had to think of different ways of creating interesting images with the objects that we had. The objects were collected from the art department randomly, so we were very limited with what there was, and we were one of the last few to pick objects. However I think that this massively improved our images, it forced us to think harder and smarter on what to take an image of and how to do it.
